1st Period: Understanding Money

When you think about money, what do you picture? Mansions and yachts? Lounging in a pool while someone serves you drinks? Sure, money can buy those things, but it’s about more than that:

  • Money can give you the freedom and flexibility to do what you want.
    • That can mean what you buy, but it can also mean pursuing the education or career you want, going on a trip you want to take, or getting to live where you want to live.
    • When you have the financial resources you need, there’s one less barrier between you and your dreams.
  • Money also lets you create safety and security for yourself and those you care about.
    • One day, you may be the provider in your family who’s responsible for supporting others.
    • Money can help you make sure your loved ones can access things like education and healthcare.

You can’t get that freedom and security, however, unless you understand the value of money, know how it works for you, and use what you know to make smart financial choices.

Start small, aim high

Yes, you may have plenty of time before you need to worry about getting a job, buying a house, or other major money issues.

But whether you mean to or not, the decisions you make today are laying the foundation for the money habits you’ll have for the rest of your life. So why not lay a foundation for success?
